... and that was a mistake.

Day 12: Cape Lookout (7) to Beaufort (6)

Kay (from that day's log) - "#### ####!"

I am sure that I, or our children, or, for that matter, no person alive or dead, have ever heard Kay use those words. More surprising was the "!", other than as a grammatical exercise, Kay is not an exclamation person. Never! (I, of course, am an exception in both categories.)

I mentioned in the first of these posts, when we had a problem extracting the anchor, on our initial trip to the Cape, in our Catalina 22:
"That was not the last time we would have that problem at Cape Lookout but it was the last time with the Catalina."
Well this was the second. The motor, the winches, our arms, could not extract it. So we decided to put up the sails. And - BANG, BANG, Bang, bang - like a machine gun, the battens exploded from the sail. Fortunately, there were no other boats within 100 yards or us, lest they be speared. Sail, motor, winches, us, and the anchor broke free and we were on our way. (Though it might have better if we had stayed there.)

"Sailed back to Beaufort under double reefed main alone. Winds 25 - 35 knots, seas 6 - 7 feet."

About half way back I became really concerned about coming in the inlet. I called the Coast Guard to ask about conditions. They told me that "they didn't know, as none of their boats were going out." Great. They added that I "might check with commercial fishermen." All, well and good, except that there were absolutely no other boats out, except us. UGH! Oh well, "in for a penny, in for a dime."

The inlet was something else, huge waves with white water on both sides. We tried to surf in on one of the waves by dumping air when necessary to avoid pitch poling. At one point we were making 10+ knots over the ground, we were actually planing a keel boat. Not as much fun as I thought it would be. Not at all. It was over so fast that neither of us had time to be terrified, as any sensible person should have been.

"What a boat. Kept us safe and dry. And, of course it rained and rained and - ____."
